Coyotes run past Diggers

CALDWELL, Idaho — Nick Calzaretta ran for 162 yards and five touchdowns, and Darius-James Peterson rumbled for three scores Saturday as the College of Idaho beat Montana Tech 64-35 in a Frontier Conference football game at Simplot Stadium. Stats

The loss, Tech’s second straight, all but eliminates the No. 17 Orediggers from playoff consideration.

The Orediggers (6-3) will close the regular season next Saturday against No. 7 Southern Oregon on the Bob Green Field. The Raiders clinched the Frontier Conference title Saturday with a 38-17 win at MSU-Northern.

The Coyotes improved to 5-4 in the Frontier Conference and 5-5 overall.

Calzaretta, a freshman, entered the game with 294 yards and four touchdowns on the season. Saturday he did his damage 22 carries, scoring on runs of 2, 2, 7, 68 and 1 yards.

Peterson, the dual-threat quarterback, scored on runs of 1, 1 and 4 yards. He ran 12 times for 92 yards.

Keenan Pattweell added 68 yards and a score on the ground as COI ran for 388 yards on the day.

The Orediggers played without senior quarterback Quinn McQueary, who has played though an injury the last few weeks. Tech also lost star running back Jed Fike to an injury early in the game.

Redshirt freshman Davan Norris started at quarterback and completed 28 of 44 passes for 357 yards and four touchdowns for the Orediggers.

He hit Chris Kelly for two scores and Dion Williams and Chris Lachance for one. Williams caught 10 passes for 100 yards.

Sophomore Braden Feisthamel ran for 40 yards and a touchdown. The Orediggers, though, could only muster 85 yards on the ground without Fike, who carried four times for 11 yards before leaving the game.
