Copper Game set to Kickoff at 6 PM featuring #16 Tech and #15 Carroll

As we all know sports in the Mining City are booming, especially at Montana Tech in all programs and head man Kyle Samson is ready to improve on a 7-3 season they had last year. Tech had a flourishing Offense and a stout D last year both of which ranked top 10 in the nation and look to build off that as they are set to face off against the Fighting Saints in the Copper game tonight.

The #16 ranked Orediggers are set to face off against rival #15 Carroll College in a Non-conference first game tonight at 6 PM at Bob Green Field at Coliseum.

Coach Kyle Samson is looking to bring his record to 2-1 in season openers, as well as being able to go 2-1 against Carroll, Tech won 26-10 in the Copper game a season ago.

Carrol will be the only team the Diggers will play twice this season. The Montana Tech offense sees 8 returning starters from last year’s team.

In 2022 the Orediggers averaged 35 points and 400 yards on offense per game, which led the Frontier Conference, Junior QB Blake Thelen will take the snaps under center this year for the Orediggers. He completed 53 percent of his passes and threw for 12 touchdowns.

Whie the offense will see 8 players back the D will have 5 players back from a season ago, where the Digger defense ranked second in the nation in yards allowed per game at 273 yards and allowing just 138 yards a game through the air. Notable returners from last year will be linebacker Cole Wyant, DB Angel Sanchez, and Gabe Zaneitti on the D line.

Just because it is a nonconference game doesn’t mean there will not be fireworks between these two nationally ranked juggernauts, expect to see a show and a great crowd on this late summer day in the Mining City and great start to the 23-24 Campaign.
