Cooney signs with Tech volleyball team

Mariah Cooney will keep her volleyball talents on the Butte Hill.

The Butte Central star signed to play for Montana Tech, Oredigger volleyball coach Brian Solomon announced today. Cooney signed an NAIA letter of intent.

“We’re excited to add a local standout like Mariah,” Solomon said in a statement. “She is a great fit for our team, campus and ambassador for the community.”

Cooney was a member of the Maroons volleyball team that attended the Class A state tournament for the first time in school history. This past season, Cooney received an all-conference award

A multisport athlete, Cooney also participates in basketball and track. As a junior, she was selected all-conference on the basketball court. This season she’s a key member of a team looking for its third straight trip to the Class A State title game.

Last track season, Cooney went to the State meet in the long jump, triple jump, javelin, and the 400 meters. She also ran at State on the BC 400-meter and 1,6,00-meter relay.

Cooney, the daughter of Colleen Kasperick and Chris Cooney, was named academic All-State in both volleyball and basketball.
