Cooney, Maroons wrap up SWA title

ANACONDA — Mariah Cooney had a career night Saturday at Memorial Gym.

The Butte Central senior scored 21 points as the Maroons claimed the Southwestern A Conference title with a 54-39 win over the rival Anaconda Copperheads.

Cooney was one of nine BC players to score points in the regular-season finale. BC closed the regular season at 9-1 in conference and 14-4 overall. The Maroons receive a first-round bye at next week’s Southwestern A Divisional tournament at the Maroon Activities Center.

BC will play at 12:30 p.m. on Friday.

Hannah Stajcar scored seven points in the win. Danika Neumann, Danee Leary and Alysea Pica each scored six, while Annie Ossello scored four. Also, Chandra McCurdy tossed in two, and Shelby Paffhausen and Sierra Pica each scored one.

Lacee and Courtney Moodry each scored 11 points to pace the Copperheads, who fell to 3-7 and 6-12. Taylor Flynn tossed in eight.
