Cobra’s season ends with 4-3 loss in Game 3

WHITEFISH — The Butte Cobras scored three goals in the third period Sunday, but the team fell just short. Whitefish held on for a 4-3 victory in the deciding Game 3 in the first round of the WSHL playoffs. Stats

Brett Fernandez scored 2 minutes, 53 seconds into the first period to give the Wolverines the lead for good. Chris Cutshall scored two goals in the second period, and Ian Wiens added one as the home team extended the lead heading into the final 20 minutes.

Butte came out firing in the third. Anton Zimmer scored a short-handed, unassisted goal 23 seconds into the final frame to get the comeback started.

Nikita Polishchuk added a goal at the 6:33 mark to cut the lead to 4-2. Dzmitry Daniliuk and Brock Solomon assisted. Zimmer struck again, off an assist from Bogdan Shleev and Rudloff, to make it 4-3 at the 7:11 mark.

That, however, was as close as the Butte club got to extend its season. Whitefish moves on to Round 2, while the Cobras’ inaugural season comes to an end.
