WHITEFISH — The Montana Tech Orediggers are the preseason favorite in the Frontier Conference coaches football poll which was announced today. Last year’s conference co-champions received the most first place votes, but tied Carroll College in total points.
Montana Tech and Southern Oregon tied for the regular season title last year with each team posing 8-2 conference records. The tie breaker went to Montana Tech and the Orediggers received the automatic bid to the NAIA Football Championship Series. Southern Oregon qualified as an at-large team.
The Orediggers finished 8-3 last season falling to national champion runner-up Morningside in the first round of the NAIA FCS. The season had many highlights including an eight-game win streak, defeating than-ranked No. 2 Carroll College and achieving No. 7 in the national coaches’ poll. Tech is currently ranked No. 11 in the NAIA Preseason Poll.
Carroll and Southern Oregon were the only other schools to receive first place votes.
Coaches were not allowed to vote for their own teams. First place was worth seven points, second place worth six, third place worth five, fourth place worth four, fifth place worth three, sixth place worth two and seventh place worth one.
