CMR girls kick past Bulldogs

GREAT FALLS — It’s hard to take anything positive from a 7-0 loss in soccer. That, however, is exactly what Butte High girls’ soccer coach Kevin Petritz was doing Saturday afternoon.

The Bulldogs fell 7-0 to Great Falls Russell. The loss dropped the Bulldogs to 0-4 overall and 0-2 in Eastern AA play.

Petritz, though, saw the glass as half full after a loss that saw the Bulldogs trailing 6-0 at halftime to a team that played its starters 70 of the 80 minutes.

“I challenged them to win the second half or at least tie it,” Petritz said. “They scored with 10 seconds left in the game, otherwise we tied the second half.”

Petritz said he was pleased with his entire team for their inspired play in the second half.

“They could have easily quit,” the coach said. “They played together as a team. If they can play that way for 80 minutes, we’ll be tough to beat.”

The Butte High junior varsity team fell 5-0 in their first action of the season. Bulldog coach Chris Bestgen said his team started to show signs of good things by the end of the match.

The Bulldogs are back in action Friday when they play host to Billings West.
