CMR boys, West girls lead at Fairmont

GREGSON — The Butte High boys’ and girls’ golf teams have some work to do Friday at the Butte Invitational golf tournament at the Fairmont Hot Springs Golf Course.

The Bulldog girls sit in fifth place, while the Butte High boys are in 11th after Thursday’s first round. The tournament features all 14 Class AA teams.

The Great Falls Russell boys sit atop the team standings. Billings West leads on the girls’ side.

The Golden Bears carded a 358 Thursday to take a 13-shot lead over second-place Billings Senior. Kalispell Glacier sits in third at 376, followed by Bozeman at 381 and Butte High at 383.

Kortney McNeil of Billings Senior and Teigan Avery of Glacier top the girls’ leaderboard at 80. Hanna Zwemke and Mike’la Atkinson of West are next at 83, followed by West’s Hayden Flohr and Bozeman’s Bridget Beyer at 85.

Butte High’s Shealyn Hafer is six shots out at 86.

Fellow Butte High senior Hailey Oglin is in the hunt after shooting an 89. Bulldog sophomore Alexis Williams hit a 95 for the Bulldogs, while senior Ashten McCloskey, who went on to play soccer for the Bulldogs in the evening, shot 113.

CMR carded a 301 to take a four-shot lead over West in the boys’ team race. Bozeman is third followed by Senior at 313 and Skyview and Helena Capital at 314. Butte High shot 331.

Joey Moore of West hit 2-under par 70 to take the first-round lead. CMR’s Easton Enot is one shot back at 71, while Gage Passon of Billings Skyview and Tyson Odden of Bozeman shot 73.

Butte High junior Trey Hoagland is in the hunt. He led the Bulldogs with a 76.

Classmate Will Kilmer carded an 82, while sophomore Houston Green shot 85, freshman Isaiah Weldon hit 88 and junior Tucker Thatcher shot 94.

The tournament resumes at 9 a.m. on Friday.
