Friday’s matches moved to Hamilton

The wind was bitter cold and unkind Thursday as the Southwestern A Divisional tennis tournament played for about 12 hours in the Mining City.

Players, fans and tournament workers braved those conditions from 9 a.m. until snow started to fall a little before 9 p.m. Action is nearly complete, with just a handful of matches left for Friday.

Frida’s play has been moved to the Canyons Athletic Club in Hamilton because of the weather. No Butte Central players will be making the trip. All the Maroons who made it to the second day of the tournament lost out on Thursday.

None of them went down without a fight, though.

Mollie Drew made a nice run on the girls’ singles consolation side. She picked up a win before dropping a three-set decision.

BC’s two remaining girls’ doubles lost out in three-set battles. Miranda Murray and Meredith Varady went down swinging, as did Payton Hartwick and Sage Wall.

In boys’ doubles, Central freshman won a match before falling to senior teammates Drew Badovinac and Gage Guldseth. The elder Maroons went down in a third set on the next match.

Nick Lester won two matches on the boys’ singles consolation side before bowing out.

The girls played at Stodden Park, and the boys played at the West Elementary School courts before moving south to Stodden later in the day.

Girls’ doubles competition is complete with Hailey Anderson and Madison Henry of Corvallis taking home the title. They beat Rachel Fluckiger and Eden Kindberg of Dillon in a 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 championship battle.

Hamilton’s Eliana Foss beat Dakota Powell of Corvallis in straight sets for the girls’ singles title.

Ryan Hutchison of Corvallis won the boys’ singles title with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) win over Kyle Hawley of Dillon.
