Cats unveil 2016 schedule, future games vs. Big 12, Pac 12

BOZEMAN — Montana State’s 2016 football schedule begins with the Bobcats’ oldest out-of-state rival, concludes with one of the oldest college football series in the West, and in between features six contests against teams still in contention for the 2015 FCS Playoffs.

Montana State opens its 2016 football season on Thursday, Sept. 1 with its first trip to Moscow, Idaho, for a football game against the Idaho Vandals for the first time since 1994, when the Vandals played in the Big Sky Conference. Now a member of the FBS Sun Belt Conference for football, Idaho was one of the five charter members of the Big Sky, along with MSU, and in 1905 became the first football game ever played by Montana State against an out-of-state opponent. MSU lost to the Vandals 56-7 in Pullman, Washington, in 2000.

The Bobcats follow their old-school season opener in 2016 with a pair of first-time opponents. Bryant University, an FCS member of the Northeast Conference located in Smithfield, R.I., visits Bobcats Stadium on Sept. 10. The Bulldogs, like MSU, are 5-5 this season, 3-2 in the NEC and one game out of a share of the league title. One week later MSU hosts NCAA Division II foe Western Oregon, on Sept. 17, before hosting North Dakota in the league opener on Sept. 24.

The Bobcats league slate includes games at Sacramento State, Weber State, Southern Utah and Montana. Montana State also hosts Northern Arizona, Eastern Washington, and UC Davis in conference contests.

Montana State also announced portions of future schedules, including a home-and-home series with FCS power South Dakota State in 2017 (Bozeman) and 2018 (Brookings). The Bobcats also visit Washington State of the Pac 12 in 2017 and Big 12 entry Texas Tech in 2019. The Cats met SDSU in the FCS Playoffs a year ago, with the Jackrabbits ending MSU’s season, 47-40.
