BOZEMAN – Butte High had just two wrestlers left in action Saturday at the Tom LeProwse Invitational in Bozeman, but both of them came away with an appearance on the tournament podium.
Butte 103-pound junior Tyler Casey pinned his way out of the consolation bracket to claim third place, while Braxton Henningsen fought his way through the wrestlebacks for fifth place at 132 pounds.
Class B-C powerhouse Colstrip won the tournament with 187.5 points, while host Bozeman took second with 173.5. Great Falls was third at 170, while Butte took 13th place in the 29-team tournament with 88 points.
“Casey really wrestled tough,” noted Butte High head coach Cory Johnston. “And Ax’s first match of the day was against a kid who’s been ranked No. 1 all year.”
Henningsen handed Missoula Sentinel’s Jake Hegel an 11-9 defeat, though Johnston said it wasn’t really close.
Butte Central’s Austin Nieves (132) and Colter Stillwagon (170) also participated, but were eliminated in Friday’s action.
A second-chance tournament was held in conjunction with Saturday’s action, but was limited to three-minute matches.
Butte High is back in action Tuesday evening when the Bulldogs host Bozeman for senior night. They’ll follow that up with a trip to the Rocky Mountain Classic in Missoula next weekend.
