HELENA — Carroll College gave its fans something to celebrate during Saturday’s home-opening football game.
Matthew Burgess ran for three touchdowns and Devan Bridgewater threw for two more as the Saints beat defending Frontier Conference champion Rocky Mountain College 44-7 at Nelson Stadium. (Stats)
Burgess broke free for a 93-yard touchdown run in the second quarter, and Carroll took a 23-7 lead into halftime. The Saints broke it open with 21 straight points in the third quarter.
A 61-yard strike from Bridgewater to Shane Sipes got the Saints rolling after the break.
Bridgewater completed 11 of 21 passes for 230 yards. The redshirt freshman, who was picked off once, also threw a touchdown pass to Tony Collins.
Gurgess ran for 153 yards on 21 carries. Bridgewater scrambled for 79 yards on six attempts.
The Carroll defense intercepted Drew Korf three times. Matt Kvech, Zach Spiroff and Butte Central graduate Nate McGree each picked off a pass for the Saints. McGree, a junior linebacker, returned the pick 22 yards.
Carroll (1-1) will celebrate homecoming next Saturday when they welcome MSU-Northern to Nelson Stadium.
Rocky (2-1, 1-1) will play host to Montana Western.
