‘Cardiac Kids’ do it again

Butte’s senior girls were at it again this summer.

The Mile High/Northwest team advanced to the Senior Softball World Series in Delaware for the third time in four years by winning the Western Regional tournament July 31 in Missoula.

A week after sweeping a Billings team to win the state title, the Butte girls went 8-0 in the regional tournament to secure their trip to Sussex, Del. Four of those games were one-run games for the girls, who earned the nickname the “Cardiac Kids.”

Butte’s girls generated some serious excitement when they won their first two games, 4-0 over Canada and 6-0 over Asia-Pacific.

The Butte team, though, lost its next three games and placed sixth — in the world.

“Butte can be proud of the girls and they way they competed,” Butte coach Jay McCloskey said

Montana had never had a World Series team before Butte began its run in 2009.

Members of the 2012 Butte All-Star team were Katey Walsh, Ashten McCloskey, Shannon McLaughlin, Maria Michelotti, Amanda Spear, Kendall Alley, Ashton LaFond, Justyce Connole, Courtney Thomas, Morgan Bagley, Bethany McLean, Nikki Guizzo, Jesse Robertson and Bobbie Osterman. Lynn McCloskey is the manager. The coaches are Jay McCloskey, Joe Walsh, Russ Robertson and Sid DeBarathy.
