Butte’s Nielson captures title at Montana Cup

GREAT FALLS — Butte High sophomore Hailey Nielson ran to the junior girls’ title Saturday at the Montana Cup.

Nielson finished the 4.2-mile race at the Anaconda Hills Golf Course in 31 minutes, 0.22 seconds to win the 19-and-under division. That is a pace of 7 minutes, 28 seconds per mile. (Results)

The victory came a week after Nielson placed 33rd in the Class AA State meet in Missoula. She placed 12th overall. Helena’s Kylee Wetzel placed second at 31:26.

Billings runner Mary Owen won the race with a time of 27:35. Whitehall’s Nicole Murray, who was running for Butte in the team competition, finished second in 28:31. Murray took home the female 40-and-over title.

Don Foley was the only other Butte runner to compete. He placed 35th overall in 28:17. Nicolas Composto run the race in 22:47.
