Butte’s Burnett qualifies for State AA tennis

MISSOULA — Next week’s Class AA State tennis tournament in Great Falls will include Butte High’s Ashlyn Burnett.

The Bulldog sophomore won three matches Wednesday to place third at the Western AA Divisional meet. The top for individuals and doubles teams advance.

Burnett won loser-out matches against Marina Kashirets and Grace Hurteau of Missoula Sentinel to qualify for State. She then knocked off Sophia Geranios of Helena High for third place.

Butte High had four other players fall just short of a trip to Great Falls.

Senior Kayden Dziak fell in the semifinals to eventual champion Jace Tolleson Knee of Missoula Big Sky. Cyrus Kiely of Helena High then ended Dziak’s season in the consolation semifinals.

Kiely also ended the day for Butte High freshman Isaak King in the round before.

In girls’ doubles, Butte High junior Brooke McGrath and senior Ayrika Gerry opened the day with a consolation win over Big Sky’s Hollin Keintz and Brooke Williams. However, they fell to Sentinel’s Mia McLennon and Jayden Johnston in the consolation semifinals.

The tournament has not yet been completed. Rain stopped play on Wednesday with a handful of matches left.

The State tournament is scheduled for next Thursday and Friday.
