Butte wrestlers place at LeProwse tourney

BOZEMAN – Great Falls ran off with the team title at the Tom LeProwse “Battle in the Bridgers” Wrestling Invitational Friday and Saturday at Bozeman High, but Butte High and Butte Central both had a few good showings in the meet as well.

Butte High’s Lee Cannon notched a second-place finish, falling to Bozeman’s Keavon Buckley in the 195-pound finals, while Levi Renz took third at 145 pounds in the big tournament. The Bulldogs also got a fourth-place spot at 126 pounds from Ax Henningsen, while his younger brother Bryson wound up eighth at 113 pounds.

The Maroons got a pair of fourth-place finishes from Clay Stillwagon at 113 pounds and Zach Hart at 138, while Bryce Noctor wound up in seventh at 106 pounds.

Cannon, who now holds a 23-4 record on the season, ran into a tough matchup against Buckley in the final. The pair last met at the CMR Holiday tourney where Buckley scored a 9-2 decision after Cannon made a last-ditch effort at a head-and-arm throw to pull ahead late. The move backfired, and Buckley got back points and the win.

Butte High head coach Jim Bob Humphrey said his staff has been working to help Cannon “open up” and wrestle more aggressively. That motivation was apparent in Cannon’s three pin victories en route to the finals, including a semifinal win over Dillon’s Parker Tezak.

“Lee opened up against Tezak,” Humphrey observed. “When he’s aggressive like that, his opponents have a heck of a time with him.”

Cannon came out hard against Buckley, but the Bozeman standout was prepared and countered effectively for an early takedown. Late in the second period Buckley took advantage of an opening and threw Cannon to his back with a head-and-arm and scored the pin.

At 145 pounds, Renz scored a technical fall and a major decision to land in a semifinal matchup with Anaconda’s Bryan Armstrong. While both wrestlers managed escapes, Armstrong scored the only takedown of the match to claim a 3-1 decision. Renz bounced back in the consolation semis with a win over Bozeman’s Ben Manion, setting up a match with CMR’s Isiah Yates for third place. Renz was solid and quick in his 3-1 victory over the Rustler.

Ax Henningsen, who over the holiday break dropped from 132 to 126 pounds, opened the tourney with a pin win before falling to Dylan Duffalo of Missoula Sentinel in the first period of their second-round match. Henningsen roared through the wrestlebacks with three pins to force a rematch with Duffalo in the consolation semifinals. Henningsen fell behind early but stormed back to nearly pin his opponent and avenge the earlier loss with a 9-1 win. Henningsen had to settle for fourth, however, as he was pinned by Bozeman’s Silas Hopkins in the consolation final.

“We started out slow Friday,” Humphrey said. “It was a real challenging first round, but most of the guys came back hard and wrestled ’til the bitter end. A lot of times things didn’t go our way, but they wrestled hard.”

Stillwagon came in as the top-seeded wrestler at 113 pounds and rolled through his first two matches, despite battling the flu bug the past week. The Maroon then lost in the third period of the semifinals to Clayton Currier of Columbus, the same wrestler who defeated Stillwagon at the CMR Holiday Classic two weeks ago. Stillwagon rallied to pin Tyler Meyer of Great Falls in the consolation semifinals, but didn’t have the energy left to compete for third

Zach Hart won his first match Friday, but a loss to Havre’s Parker Filius sent him to the consolation bracket, where he ran into two Butte High wrestlers. Hart defeated Kaleb Ferriter 12-2, then scored a first-period pin over Willy Anderson. Hart came up just short of third place, suffering a 5-4 decision to Logan McGreevey of Missoula Big Sky.

Butte High is back on the mat on Tuesday in Belgrade against Anaconda and the host Panthers, before traveling to the Smelter City on Thursday for a 6 p.m. dual with the Copperheads. Butte Central’s next scheduled action comes Friday and Saturday when the Maroons travel east to compete in the Miles City Classic.
