Butte wrestlers pack podiums at divisional meets

Forty wrestlers from The Mining City earned place-winnings in high school divisional tournaments completed Saturday.
The Butte High boys copped 19 places, including three championships, and the Bulldog girls came up with 17 place-winners, two of whom were weight-class titlists. The Butte Central boys picked up four places.
Qualifiers advance to next weekend’s state all-class tournament in Billings.
Flathead of Kalispell won the Western AA team crowns in both boys’ and girls’ competitions of the divisional held in Helena. The boys scored 304.5 points while Butte High was second with 265 and Missoula Sentinel third with 189.5 in the eight-team field.
Brothers Maverick McEwen and Ryder McEwen won championships for Butte High, as did Bradey Doyle. Maverick McEwen, a champ in Washington last year before returning to Butte for his senior year, ruled the 160-pound class on a 4:34 championship-round pin over Dillon Gunlock of Missoula Hellgate. Sophomore Ryder McEwen topped the 132-pound class with a 3:14 pin over Aiden Downing of Flathead. Doyle, a recent varsity promotion, took the 113-pound title as a freshman with a 13-8 decision over Jayce Kolendich of Sentinel.
The Butte High boys’ other place-winners were sophomore Keegan Hunt, second at 103; Bode Hazlett, second at 138; Will Stepan, second at 152; Adien Cuchine, second at 170; and Kade Schleeman, second in the 285-pound limit class; Colter Espelin, third at 120; and Trey Hansen, third at 145; Reveles McEwen (eighth-grade brother to Maverick and Ryder) fourth at 113; Bridger Garrison, fifth at 120; Garrett Henson, fifth at 205; Darryn Rossiter, sixth at 126; Joey Ward, sixth at 132; Bridger Brancamp, sixth at 182; Aiden Maesar, seventh at 103; Grady Winston, eighth at 126; Reece Cunneen, eighth at 160; and Waylond Hicks, eighth in the 285 limit class.
Flathead and Butte High also went 1-2 in the girls’ team standings, scoring 297 and 223 points, respectively. Helena Capital was third with 129.
Sisters Naveah and Sophie Grunhuvd won championships. Naveah Grunhuvd won the 132-pound title with a 1:45 pin over Kiera Lackey of Flathead. Sophie Grunhuvd pinned Lucia Schlapfer of Missoula Big Sky a second faster, 1:44, to top the 126-pound class.
The other Bulldogs to place were Mattie Stepan, second at 152; Rylie Radcliffe, second at 185; Peyton Liva, third at 103; Jessie LaPier, third at 107; Aydin Gonzales, third at 114; Baely Norris, third at 145; Berkli Salusso, fourth at 100; Kierra Case, fourth at 138; McKenna LeCoure, fourth in the 285-pound limit class; Bella Real, fifth at 107; Jessica Blow, fifth at 126; Nova Kovnesky, fifth at 152; Morgan Merrick, sixth at 120; Jailyn Hocking, sixth at 165 and Keeleigh Doherty, seventh at 120.
No girls from Butte Central were listed in the Western A Divisional results from Hamilton. The Maroon boys, though, tallied 60 points. Ronan won with 268.5 with Frenchtown second at 262 and Columbia Falls third at 204.
The BC place-winners were Marquis Abad, second at 103 pounds; Devin Rossiter, fourth at 126; Jack Holmes, sixth at 120; and James Holmes, seventh at 138.
