Some weekends demand attention. Brea Henderson’s performance at the plate and in the circle left no doubt.
After opening the tournament with a tough 9-0 loss to Fergus, Magic-McCarthy 16U refused to fold. Instead, they rattled off five straight victories to fight their way back through the bracket and capture the Gold Bracket Championship. At the center of that championship run was Henderson.
The Butte High standout was dominant throughout the weekend, piling up an incredible 50 strikeouts during the tournament. In Sunday’s championship-clinching 5-1 victory over MT Avalanche/Larson 16U, Henderson struck out 10 batters, allowing just five hits and one run while walking only one over a complete seven-inning performance.
Her command was outstanding. Henderson threw 81 pitches, 62 for strikes, and consistently shut down opposing hitters throughout the tournament.
As impressive as her work in the circle was, Henderson also delivered at the plate. She blasted two home runs during the tournament in one game, proving she could change a game with both her arm and her bat.
The championship run carried extra meaning for the Magic program. On Sundays, the team wears pink in honor of Delaney Doherty, adding another layer of inspiration to an already memorable weekend.
A tournament championship, 50 strikeouts, a pair of home runs, and a dominant title-game performance make Henderson an easy choice for this week’s Butte Sports Athlete of the Week.
The 2026 summer season is just getting started, but Henderson and Magic-McCarthy 16U have already announced themselves as a team to watch. With their ace leading the way, they opened the year with a bang and brought home championship hardware in the process.
