Jim LeProwse delivered on a promise he made four years ago.
LeProwse, a Butte native, is the head softball coach at Dawson Community College in Glendive. Friday night, he announced he signed Butte High senior Jessica Robertson to pitch for the Buccaneers.
“When I first moved up here — when she was a freshman — I kept telling her dad ‘I’m going to be knocking on your door,'” LeProwse, now in his fourth year, said Friday. “I knew she’d be a good one.”
When Butte High begins the season next Saturday, Robertson will enter her third season as the ace of the Bulldogs.
Last season, Robertson picked up 11 of Butte High’s 13 wins on her way to earning second-team All-Eastern AA honors.
LeProwse, the reigning Mon-Dak and Region IX Coach of the Year, said he worked Robertson out about a month ago. He was blown away by her performance and signed her on the spot.
“She’ll definitely help us win championships, there’s no doubt about it,” said LeProwse, whose Buccaneers won the Region IX title and advance to the Super Region in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. “She probably had the best workout we’ve had as far as hitting all her spots and changing speeds.”
The Buccaneers play in the NJCAA Division II. Dawson is a two-year program, and LeProwse said he plans to use Robertson as a true freshman next school year.
“She’s just a flat-out competitor,” LeProwse said. “I’m really excited to get her.”
Robertson is the daughter of Russ and Missy Robertson.
