BOZEMAN — Butte High junior Hailey Nielson had a pretty good week.
Four days after winning the Butte Central Invitational at Fairmont, Nielson ran to 15th place at the crowded Bozeman Invitational Saturday at the Bridger Creek Golf Course. (Results)
Nielson finished the 5-kilometer course in 20 minutes, 33 seconds. That is six seconds faster than her time Tuesday.
Sage Brooks of Missoula Hellgate won the race, crossing in 18:26. Kylie Hartnett of Helena High was second at 18:39, followed by Alex Moore of Bozeman in 1919.
In all, 139 runners competed in the girls’ race. Bozeman won the team title with just 38 points. Hellgate took second at 67, while Helena finished third at 119.
Butte High did not have enough runners for a team score.
Junior Ida Real finished in 24:05 for the Bulldogs, while classmate Kyla Felix finished in 25:17. Butte High senior Katelyn Rapp ran in 27:16.
Butte Central junior Savannah Parks finished the race in 25:42. That is an improvement of 1 minute, 59 seconds over her Tuesday time.
Injury highlighted the day for the Butte High boys. Sophomore Brady Maloughney, Butte High’s fastest runner Tuesday was held out with a sore knee. Also, senior Sean Foley was knocked to the ground in a crowded area and suffered a knee injury that ended his race early.
Sophomore Trey Whitlock and junior Grant Smith broke 20 minutes to lead the Butte High boys. Whitlock crossed in 19:13, while Smith ran in 19:28.
Also for Butte High, sophomore J.C. Connole finished in 20:13 ran in 20:13, sophomore Cohwen Houchin finished in 20:20, freshman Ryan Tomich clocked in with a time of 20:40, and sophomore Damian Young finished in 21:23.
Ian Curtis of Missoula Hellgate won the race that saw 173 runners finish in 16:04. Teammate Ignatius Fitzgerald took second in 16:12, and Lewistown’s Sam Fulbright placed third at 16:12.
Hellgate won the team title with 36 points, five better than Bozeman.
Next up for the Bulldogs is Friday’s Great Falls Invitational. Butte Central will run the same day in Twin Bridges. Butte High placed 18thh with 584 points.
