Butte High wrestlers cradle runner-up awards

Team scores and awards were presented Saturday at the conclusion of the Western AA Divisional high school wrestling tournaments held in the Butte Civic Center last weekend.
Defending state champion Flathead High of Kalispell won both the boys’ and the girls’ divisions while Butte High placed second in both.
The tourney had been conducted as a seeding tournament with no team scores kept or awards given. Chuck Merrifield, Butte High activities director, told buttesports.com during the week that the meet is now recognized as a full-fledged divisional with team points kept and award presentations allowed.
The Flathead boys compiled 302 points and Butte High’s totaled 254.5. Helena Capital placed third with 236.
In the girls’ standings, Flathead topped the list with 236 points with Butte High second at 212 and Glacier High of Kalispell third with 193 points.
Billings West won the Eastern AA Divisionals. The state tournament will be held Friday and Saturday at The Metra in Billings.

Boys — 1, Kalispell Flathead 302. 2, Butte High 254.5. 3, Helena Capital 236. 4, Kalispell Glacier 178. 5, Helena High 129. 6, Missoula Big Sky/Loyola 113. 7, Missoula Sentinel 109. 8, Missoula Hellgate 27.
Girls — Kalispell Flathead 236. 2, Butte High 212. 3, Kalispell Glacier 193. 4, Helena Capital 78.5. 5, Missoula Big Sky/Loyola 71. 6, Helena High 44. 7 (tie), Missoula Hellgate and Missoula Sentinel 10.
