Butte High tennis teams put season on the line in Bozeman

The Butte High boys’ and girls’ tennis teams will be in Bozeman early Thursday for the Southern AA Divisional tournament.

The Bulldogs are hoping to secure berths in the Class AA State tournament. They’re also hoping for dry courts with rain and snow in the forecast.

Play begins at 9 a.m. Thursday at the Bozeman High School courts. If play is moved inside, action could drag out until 11 p.m., Butte High coach Mavis Bentley said.

Butte High will compete against Bozeman and Helena Capital. The top four individuals and top four doubles teams advance to next week’s Class AA State tournament in Helena.

The Bulldogs will enter strong teams on both sides.

For the Butte High girls, Molly Nelson earned a first-round bye in singles play. Hannah Amtmann, Jacee Sprunger and Janae Valley will also play singles for Butte High’s girls.

Two Bulldog doubles teams received a first round bye. Carlee Johnson and Sydney Jennings get a free pass to the second round, as does the team of McKaul Ori and Sierra McGinnis.

Caitlyn Sheehan and Jessica Rosa will play a first-round match. So will Molly Sprunger and Lakyn Ludwick.

On the boys’ side, Levin Mullaney and Blake Casagranda earned a bye in the first round of singles play. Braden Loyola and Erik Casagranda will have to play first-round matches.

Brett Bentley and Tyler Reilly will take a bye into the second round for the Bulldogs in doubles.

Nate Scherman will pair up with Marcus Madrazo, Tyler Ossello will play with Seth Jaksha and Jory Nordstrom will team with Mike Hogan.

The tournament is a two-day even. Action is set to begin at 8 a.m. on Friday. Click below for the tournament brackets.
