GREAT FALLS — Friday was a good day for the Butte High swimming teams.
The Bulldogs set themselves up for an even better Saturday, qualifying to compete in 13 races in the finals of the state meet at the Great Falls High pool. Butte High’s girls will have seven swims Saturday, while the Bulldog boys will have six.
Bulldog senior Catherine Russo once again led the way for the Bulldogs. She locked up four more All-State performances on Day 1.
Russo is sitting as the No. 1 seed in the 50-yard freestyle and the 100 butterfly. She is the three-time defending state champion in those events.
She also swam a leg on a pair of relay teams that qualified for the top-six finals. The top six in each event earn All-State honors. The next six compete in the consolation finals and will score team points.
Anna Trudnowski, Kallie Hossack, Danika Murphy and Russo broke the school record to qualify first in the 200 freestyle relay.
Isabel Russo, Anna Trudnowski, Catherine Russo and Hossack took almost four seconds off their time to qualify at fourth in the 200 medley relay.
Trudnowski also earned All-State as an individual, qualifying for the finals at fifth in the 100 freestyle. She will swim in the consolation finals in eighth in the 50 freestyle.
Murphy, Carley Trefts, Isabell Russo and Hossack are seeded 11th in the 400 freestyle.
On the boys’ side, senior Max Holdsworth earned All-State, qualifying sixth in the 50 freestyle. He also qualified at seventh in the 100 butterfly.
Sophomore Thad Holdsworth is seeded seventh in the 100 freestyle.
Butte’s 200 medley relay team of Evan Zundel, Ladd Hutchinson and the Holdsworth brothers are seated eighth heading into Saturday.
That is the same see for the 200 freestyle relay team of Zundel, Josh Nelson and Holdsworths.
Hutchinson, Maece Garza, Colby Reagn and Zundel qualified 11th in the 400 freestyle relay.
