Butte High splits up awards

The outstanding awards were divided up Wednesday night at the Butte High All-Sports Banquet at the Butte Civic Center.

The Harry “Swede” Dahlberg Outstanding Boy Athlete honor went to Zach Bunney and Jake Dennehy. Both players were instrumental in bringing Butte High its first Class AA State football title in 21 years last November.

Bunney and Dennehy also excelled in basketball and track for the Bulldogs while overcoming sickness and injury.

Bunney, a future Montana Tech football player, ran a leg of the fastest 400-meter relay team in school history last weekend at State, when Butte High placed second. Dennehy placed fourth in the discus.

The Outstanding Girl Athlete honors was also split, with Hattie Thatcher and Natalee Faupel sharing the top prize. Thatcher, who signed to play basketball at Montana Tech, was a team leader in volleyball, basketball and softball, helping Butte High win the 2011 Class AA State softball title.

Faupel, a future MSU-Northern basketball player, was a four-year contributor in soccer, basketball and track. She place fifth in the javelin at State. She also scored points for the Bulldogs by running a leg in both relays.

In all, more than 30 awards were handed out at the annual banquet. Click the link below to see all of them.
