KALISPELL — Ashlyn Burnett won the consolation title in No. 1 singles Saturday at the Western AA Invitational tennis tournament.
The Butte High junior bounced back from a first-round loss with a pair of wins. She beat Grace Hurteau 6-5, 7-6 (4) in the consolation title.
The Bulldogs could have had some more big wins had rain not shortened the tournament. The No. 1 and No. 2 singles tournaments were moved inside. The rest of the brackets were not completed.
Butte High’s Ashley Olson and Sevanna Challeen advanced to the championship of the No. 2 doubles bracket before play was suspended. The Bulldog duo beat Helena Capital’s Emma Hopkins and Maya Shropshire 4-6, 7-6 (4), 10-7 in the semifinals.
They were set to take on Brooke Stanley and Summer Palmer of Missoula Big Sky in the title match.
Jason Johns and Sam Sampson played No. 1 and No. 2 singles for Butte High. No. 3 player Cole Skeel was rained out before his second match.
Carley Trefts went 1-2 at No 2 singles on the girls’ side. No. 3 player Rebecca Radocich was rained out in her second match.
Butte’s No. 1 girls’ doubles team of Brooke McGrath and Katie Keller were rained out before the start of their second match. Frankie Cox and Sage Murphy were rained out before they could play their third.
Butte boys Kershaw Mellott and Thad Holdsworth were rained out before the start of their second match.
Butte High’s boys’ and girls’ teams will be back in action next Saturday in Missoula. The Bulldogs will play host to Missoula Hellgate on Wednesday, May 4. That dual was recently added to the Bulldog schedule.
