It’s still two weeks before the Butte High cross country teams face Class AA competition.
Friday, though, the Bulldogs gave their fans a glimpse of good things to come as the team ran a 3-mile race that started and finished in Naranche Stadium during the Purple and White festivities.
The girls’ team looked particularly sharp.
“I was really happy with the girls,” said Butte High head coach Mara Osborne. “They’re a tough group. They push each other.”
Mariah Richardson posted the best time for the Butte High girls, finishing the race in 19 minutes, 4 seconds. She finished one second behind the top boys finisher, Kobi Craddock.
Bailee Hanson was next at 19:35, followed by Haley Hodge at 20:31, Joby Rosenleaf at 20:39 and Andie Hogan at 20:40.
Osborne pointed out that her team has six of seven runners back from the team that went to the state meet last year. She also pointed to impressive freshmen Joby Rosenleaf and Cati Carmody (21:08).
“They worked hard all summer,” Osborne said of her girls team. “We’re excited.”
On the boys’ side, Butte High was missing top runner Nic Raiser, who is on vacation with his family. Raiser will be with the team when it heads to Billings in two weeks.
After Craddock’s 19:13, Kolby Tretheway finished in 19:38. Seth Grant followed with 20:10, and Gunther Clark ran in 20:22.
“We’re low in numbers,” Osborne said of her boys’ squad. “Hopefully we can improve each week.”
