Butte High girls host Falcons in playoff

Butte High’s girls’ basketball team doesn’t need a history lesson to know the regular season basically means nothing right now.

Less than 24 hours after the Butte High boys shocked the state with a stunning upset at Bozeman to earn a trip to the State tournament, the Butte High girls will take on Billings Skyview in an Eastern AA playoff game at the Richardson Gym. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m. (KBOW 550 AM. Listen live.)

The winner goes to the Class AA State tournament, which is next week in Great Falls. The loser is done.

Butte High is the No. 2 seed in the Eastern AA after rolling to a 17-3 overall record and 10-2 mark in conference play.

The Bulldogs won 13 of 14 games down the stretch. Butte High won 12 in a row during that stretch, including a pair of wins over the Falcons, who placed last in the regular season at 1-11 and 4-16.

The Bulldogs beat the Falcons 52-30 Feb. 15 in Butte. They won 58-41 Jan. 18 in Billings.

Of course, that means nothing if Butte High doesn’t win this one.

Three Bulldogs average in double figures to lead Butte High into the postseason.

Senior Natalee Faupel scored a team-leading 13.1 points per game to lead the way. She scored 20 points or more four times during the regular season. Faupel also ranks among the state leaders with more than 8 rebounds per game.

Junior Sammy McGree, who scored 20 last time out against Skyview, averages 11.0, while classmate Hailey Hoagland averages 10.4 points per game.

Senior point guard Hattie Thatcher, who leads the state with nearly 6 assists per game, averages 9.1 points per game. Senior Carlie Haeffner is a force for Butte High on both sides of the court. She rounds out the starting lineup.

Taven Morrison averages a team-best 7.1 points per game. The Bulldogs held her scoreless in the last meeting.
