BOZEMAN — Butte High coach Cory Johnston called it another in a long line of baby steps.

Bulldog fans, though, have to like what they see after the Butte High wrestling team placed third at the prestigious Tom LeProwse Invitational at the Bozeman High School Gym.

Butte High, the first-day leader, scored 148 team points. Bozeman won with 174, and Billings Senior placed second at 156. Billings Skyview finished fourth at 146.5. (Complete results can be found at trackwrestling.com)

Bulldog senior Jeff Queer, the defending Class AA heavyweight state champion, won the heavyweight division, while senior 120-pounder Gabe Tierney placed third.

Butte Central junior Clay Fisher placed third at 126.

Queer enacted revenge from the CMR Holiday Classic by beating Colstrip’s Merlin Whitedirt 5-3 in the championship match. Queer also beat Whitedirt, the reigning Class B/C state champ, last week in the All-Star Dual in Great Falls.

Tierney fell to Bozeman’s Sterling Quinn in the semifinals before he battled back to capture third place.

In all, Butte High saw eight wrestlers advance to the second day and place in the top eight.

Carl Anderson took fifth in the 160-pound division, while Kameron Moreno placed sixth at 182.

Wil Queer placed seventh at 103. He beat Butte Central’s Roy Russell in the seventh-place match.

Also, Kobe Moreno wrestled to seventh place at 170, while Scout Allen, at 126, and Greyson Mandic, at 205, placed eighth.

Fisher fell to Carter Carroll of CMR in the semifinals before battling back for third place to lead the Maroons, who placed 25th with 30 points.

In all, 32 teams competed in the event, which is named after former Butte High athlete Tom LeProwse.

Butte High’s up-and-coming team will be on display Tuesday night at the Richardson Gym. The Bulldogs will celebrate Senior Night as they take on Bozeman in a dual.

The Maroons will compete in Miles City next Friday and Saturday.
