MISSOULA — The team bus might need some oxygen tanks.

Butte High’s boys’ basketball team used just seven players and a trapping defense to run past Missoula Big Sky for a 50-47 Tuesday night.

“The kids played with tons and tons of energy and battled with a very physical Big Sky squad,” Bulldog coach Luke Powers said. “It was a great win for the young team.”

Three Bulldogs scored in double figures in the victory that saw Butte High force 22 turnovers from their trap.

Trevyn Roth and Tommy Mellott each hit three 3-pointers in the win. Roth scored a game-high 14 points. He tossed in 10 of those points in the first half.

Mellott scored 11, while Clay Ferguson netted 10 for Butte High, which also got six points apiece from Kash Kelly and Kale McCarthy and three from Lathan Ricketts.

Zach Carlson also played for the Bulldogs, who held off a late Big Sky charge.

“We were so tired at the end, and they came back,” Powers said.

Butte High led 22-12 after the first quarter and 33-21 at halftime. Butte took a 40-32 advantage into the final frame.

McKee Muralt and Camdyn LaRance each scored nine points to lead the Eagles, who fell to 0-4.

The Bulldogs, who evened their record at 1-1, are back in action Thursday when they take on Helena Capital in Helena.
