GREAT FALLS — The Butte High boys’ soccer team saw its comeback attempt fall just short Saturday, as the Bulldogs dropped a 2-1 Eastern AA game against Great Falls Russell.
The Rustlers led 2-0 at halftime before Marcus Madrazo found the back of the net to cut the lead in half about halfway through the second quarter.
Madrazo scored off a goal by Zach Archibald, a sophomore who came off the bench.
“The kids showed a lot of heart coming back to score that goal and put pressure on CMR,” Butte High coach Eric Zahler said. “We had opportunities to tie the game late, but we just couldn’t find the net.”
Zahler said the Rustlers outshot the Bulldogs 12-5, and he praised the play of goalkeeper Jacob Williams.
“We had them as in the top three in the league going into the season,” Zahler said of CMR. “Their touches were a little cleaner today, and they created more opportunities than we did. I can’t wait to see them in Butte. Hopefully it will be the other way around.”
Zahler pointed out that his junior varsity team won 9-2 on Saturday. That comes after a 5-2 win over Great Falls High on Thursday.
“Our future is looking pretty bright,” Zahler said.
Butte High plays at home against Billings West on Friday.
