MISSOULA — Runners from Butte High and Butte Central put up some impressive times among a crowded field Saturday at the Mountain West Classic.
Junior Jake Vetter and senior Austin Gerry placed in the top 100 out of 400 runners to lead the Bulldogs, who placed 23rd out of 52 teams with scores on the University of Montana Golf Course. (Results)
Vetter finished 74th with a time of 17 minutes, 25 seconds, while Gerry took 88th in 17:31.
Cooper West of Great Falls Russell won the race with a blistering time of 15:30. Lewis and Clark High School from Spokane won the team title with 52 points. Bozeman was second at 69. Butte High scored 683 points.
In all, five Butte High boy runners finished in under 18 minutes. Erik Casagranda finished in 18:07, while Billy Cunneen crossed in 18:09, and Zach Carlson continued his impressive first season with the Bulldogs with a time of 18:30.
Brock Martin ran in 19:31 for Butte High, while teammate Kasey Krzan finished in 19:52.
Bulldog junior varsity runners Sean Foley (19:14) and Garrett Miller (19:32) also broke 20 minutes.
Butte Central sent three boys to the meet, and Brian McGeehan leading the way in 18:05. Nathan Ortega crossed in 19:53, and Jayden Mitchell finished in 20:46.
On the girls’ side, Butte High freshman Aubree Corcoran had another big day. She finished in 19:41 to place 28th overall in a race of 324 runners.
Tiahna Vladic of Billings Senior won the meet in 17:44, while Bozeman claimed the team title with 42 points. Missoula Hellgate was a distant second at 103.
Butte High placed 27th out of 43 teams with scores at 786.
Also running for the Butte High girls were Danika Murphy (22:24), Gabby Haberman (22:59), Helena Schoonen (23:41), Rosie Real (23:41) and Anna Trudnowski (24:01).
Savannah Parks finished in 22:09 for Butte Central.
