Butte High 2-0 at Street Duals after pinning Cowboys

By Pat Ryan

Butte High head wrestling coach Cory Johnston predicted a slower outing as Butte High continued through its first day of the Mining City Duals Jim Street Classic Wrestling Tournament Friday with a dual against Conrad.

He was wrong.

The Bulldogs needed little more than 20 minutes to chalk up their second dual win of the day – a 66-12 smoking of the Class B Cowboys, who fielded an abbreviated lineup lacking wrestlers in five of the 13 weight classes.

Of the seven contested matches – Butte forfeited the 170-pound class – all were decided by pin, and five of the falls occurred in the first period.

After a 6-6 team tie following a pair of forfeits, Butte 170-pound sophomore Carl Anderson went up a weight to face Cooper Daily at 182. Anderson scored a takedown in the first, while Daily had an escape in the second, leading to a 2-1 edge for Anderson in the third. The Bulldog started in the bottom position and quickly scored a reversal, finishing with a half Nelson pinning combination.

The Cowboys re-knotted the team score on a Hunter Mycke pin of Kyle Harding, but from there on out, it was all Bulldogs.

Heavyweight Jeff Queer ran his season record to 6-0 with a first-period pin of Bradley Vanderbush. The pair of big boys sparred early on, trading ties, but Queer shot an effective double that brought Vanderbush to his back. The match ended at the 1:30 mark.

Up next for the Bulldogs was 120-pound Tyler Casey, who stacked Kyle Richter for an 80-second pin, followed by Tyler Vetter, who ended his 132-pound match with Ronnie Barnhill in 42 seconds.

At 138 pounds, Butte High senior Bryson Henningsen ran his season record to 3-3 with a speedy 21-second pin of Brock Doty. Henningsen shot a fireman’s carry and finished a running half to the quick pin of the dual.

“Bryson’s had some miserable draws,” Johnston said of Henningsen’s season. “He’s been bumped up and down, but when he gets in there he finishes well.”

Red Schonsberg needed a period and a half to do it, but he finished out the dual with a pin of Ethan Cliver at 152 pounds. Schonsberg dominated the match, but had trouble putting away his opponent. The match score was approaching the technical fall range, but Schonsberg saved his team an extra team point by registering the pin.

“We were feeling the emotion,” Johnston explained. “We had the idea that we wanted to take it to them.”

The Bulldogs have one more dual before the Saturday round, as Butte is slated to take on defending State Class AA champion Billings Senior on Mat 5.

It’s the same mat and the same time of day Butte shocked then-defending champs Great Falls High last year. Johnston said his team wants to try the same thing this time around.

“This is what we wanted,” he said. “We wanted it to mean something. Our seniors remember that feeling we had after Great Falls High last year. Things like that you remember the rest of your life.”
