Butte handball players head to state

A  handful of Butte will play in the Montana State Singles Handball tournament, which starts Friday in Missoula.

Butte’s Dan Bersanti, who had to withdraw from the Butte City Singles tournament with an injury, will try to play through the pain to defend his state title in the plus-50 Golden Masters division.

He’ll be joined in that division by Butte’s Tom Madrazo and Butte native Mike Starcivich, who lives in Wyoming.

Brett Badovinac, who won the City Single title on Wednesday night, will play in the 40-plus Masters division. Don Foley of Butte will also compete in that group.

Cole Salo and Frankie Shields of Butte and Montana Tech student Dave Starcivich will play in the Open division, where Missoula’s Andy Tucknott will try to defend his title.

Also, Butte’s Marcus Madrazo and Sean Shields and Butte native Brandon Penrose will play in the B division. Butte native Dan Ferriter will play in the plus-70 division.
