Butte firefighters climb for a cause

SEATTLE — Four Butte firefighters competed in the Scott Firefighter Stairclimb Sunday in Seattle. The event to race up 69 flights of stairs in Seattle’s Columbia Center in full combat gear raises money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

Butte-Silver Bow Fire Department firefighters Chad Silk, Mark Mitchell, Mark McCarthy and Matt Doble raced up the 1,311 steps.

Silk, 27, placed 151st overall with a time of 16 minutes, 35 seconds. Mitchell, 28, placed 306th in 18:00, while McCarthy, 41, finished 771st in 21:41 and Doble, 26, placed 778th in 21:44.

Missoula firefighter Andrew Drobeck won the event for the fourth consecutive year, finishing in 10:46. He set the record of 10:38.2 in 2012. Drobeck also competes in Ironman triathlons.

His fourth straight win along with Missoula rural firefighter Kory Burgess’ victories from 2009-11, give Missoula-area firefighters the last seven crowns.

Missoula firefighter Benjamin Brunsvold, who finished third in 2013 and second last year, finished fourth in 12 minutes, 20 seconds.

Miles City Firefighter Sarah Young finished ninth in the women’s division, making the climb in 18:06.
