Butte Central rally ties Havre at LaVerne

Butte Central rally ties Havre at LaVerne

By Bruce Sayler

A test of wills ended in a stalemate during Saturday late-morning/mid-afternoon play at the LaVerne Combo Invitational high school girls’ fastpitch softball tournament.

Havre and tourney host Butte Central finished in a 4-all tie after the time limit allowed for only five innings to be completed.

Butte Central needed to rally in the bottom of the fifth to earn the tie. The Maroons were determined not to lose and Havre was just as stubborn about not wanting to yield them a win.

The Blue Ponies owned a 4-2 edge going into the last of the fifth. Consecutive Have errors let BC’s Zoe Doherty and Emma Keeley reach base to start the Butte Central half of the inning. After an out, both runners advanced on a wild pitch. Maci Reopelle then ripped a single to left field to score Doherty. Brenna Foley was in to run for Keeley, the Maroons’ catcher. Foley followed Doherty across the plate when a throw to pick Reopelle off first base was errant. Madison Kump was walked intentionally before Blue Pony pitcher Lauren Kato got two strikeouts to end the inning, and the game, stranding a pair of BC baserunners.

Butte Central never led. Havre grabbed the lead with two runs in the second inning. Kinzee Peterson was safe on a missed popup. Two outs later, Zephy Linton stroked a double to left field to bring Peterson home with the first run of the ballgame. Linton took third on a wild pitch and Savannah Dawson walked. A single up the middle by Peyton Brown scored Linton before the Maroons’ pitcher, Reopelle, got a strikeout to end the inning.

The BC girls tied the score with two runs in the third. Sofee Thatcher drew a walk to start the Butte Central part of the frame. Zoe Doherty singled to right field. Keeley belted a base hit to right field that drove in Thatcher and moved Doherty to third base. Foley, running for Keeley, stole second base, drawing a throw that let Doherty run home to tie the score.

Havre quickly took the lead back with a run in the fourth. Linton reached base on a one-out infield hit, stole second, went to third base on a wild pitch and got home on an infield hit by Brown.

The Blue Ponies got their 4-2 edge with a run in the fifth inning. Sydney Wilting led off the frame with a single to center field, stole second base, sped to third on an errant throw to second and came home on a sacrifice fly hit by Sam Oliver.

Keeley’s double was Butte Central’s only extra-base hit. Keeley also singled as did Zoe Doherty, Reopelle, Makala Doherty and Lexis Earles. Reopelle struck out six batters and walked only one.

The win made Butte Central 3-9-1 for the season going into a 6:45 Saturday night game against Missoula Loyola to wrap up the tournament. The Maroons are 2-6 in Southwestern A Conference games.

Blue Pony pitcher Lauren Kato registered seven strikeouts against four walks.
