CORVALLIS — The Butte Central Maroons took to the road for a 45-33 conference victory Saturday afternoon.
The Corvallis Blue Devils showed some aggressive play, even though they were playing without their 6-foot-3 tower Isabel Evans who did not suit-up due to an injury. The Blue Devils started out the game scoring with a pair of free throws by Taylor Wright followed by a 3-pointer from BC’s Olivia Bolton. The lead changed several times in the first quarter finally ending at a 9-all tie.
In the second quarter, the Maroons came out with full-court pressure and their scrappy defense held the Blue Devils to one point while building a solid lead with scoring three from Kloie Thatcher, one from Kailee Murphy, two from Alley Mueller, and Bolton with six, hitting a last-second three under pressure to take them into halftime up 24-10.
After halftime, Corvallis came out strong with a 9-0 run against the Maroons. Five Blue Devils scored in a balanced offense with four points from Lilly Berry, three from Calla Halderson, two from each Hannah Hutchinson, Ashlynn Nixon and Smith. Corvallis outscored the Maroons 13-4 ending the third quarter with a Maroon advantage 28-23.
The fourth quarter was sparked with a bucket by Strizic followed up by a shot in the paint by Megan Michelotti. After a quick timeout, the Blue Devils came out with man-to-man defensive pressure. Tricia Joyce hit a pair of free throws to take a 34-25 lead with five minutes left in the game.
Joyce scored all of her 12 points in the second half. She was perfect in the fourth quarter at the charity stripe scoring eight free throws off fouls she drew from Nixon as she took her 5-3 frame down the lane again and again.
BC’s tough pressure on defense held the blue devils to ten points in the fourth quarter. Hulverson hit a sweet 3-pointer with three minutes left in the game but not enough to get close. Butte Central wins with a 45-33 final score.
The Blue Devils were led by Lilly Berry with 10 points, Halderson with nine and Taylor Wright with four.
Butte Central Maroons had scoring from Joyce with twelve, Thatcher and Bolton with 11 apiece, four from Michelotti, three from Kailee Murphy, and two from Strizic and Mueller.
The Maroons are home next weekend with Frenchtown on Friday night and Stevensville on Saturday.
