Butte Central’s defending Class A state champion boys’ basketball team will put its season on the line Monday when they Maroons play Stevensville in a Western A Divisional play-in game.
Tipoff is 6 p.m. at the Maroon Activities Center. (Radio: KOPR, 94.1 FM, kopr94.net, or on the KOPR 94 app).
The winner advances to the Western A Divisional tournament, which starts Thursday at the Butte Civic Center. The loser goes home.
The Yellowjackets come to town at 0-14 after completing an 0-10 Southwestern A season. Butte Central is 9-6 and 5-5 and finished third in the conference in the regular season.
The Maroons beat the Yellowjackets twice in the regular season, including a 70-32 smackdown of the Yellowjackets Jan. 23 in Stevensville. In the rematch Feb. 9 in Butte, however, Stevi trailed by just four points at halftime. The Maroons pulled away in the second half for a 60-36 win.
Sophomore Dougie Peoples averages 19.9 points per game to lead the Maroons into action. He poured in 31 points in the first meeting with the Yellowjackets. Peoples also averages a team-best 5.1 rebounds.
Classmate Kyle Holter averages 8.7 points, and senior Bryan “Hugo” Holland scores 6.7 points per game. Junior Bryson Sestrich, who sank five 3-pointers and scored 23 points in BC’s Feb. 13 win over Corvallis, averages 7.8 points.
Kellan Beller averages 12.6 points per game to lead the Yellowjackets. He scored a team-leading seven points when the Yellowjackets came to two weeks ago.
