Butte athletes chalk up victories at Junior Olympic meet

BOZEMAN — Five Butte athletes brought home gold medals from the 2015 USATF Montana Association Junior Olympic Track and Field Championships over the weekend.

Rachael McGree and Ryan Ashby were double winners at the event, which was a qualifier for the Region 11 Track and Field Championships in Orem, Utah.

McGree, competing in the girls’ 15-16 age group, claimed victories in the 100-meter hurdles and the long jump. She jumped 5.40 meters to win the long jump. Her time in the hurdles was 15.52 seconds.

Ashby, in the boys’ 15-16 age group, leapt to victories in the long jump and triple jump. He jumped 5.20 meters in the long jump and 10.99 in the triple.

Zach Merrifield, Rileigh McGree and Nathan Boyle also claimed gold.

Merrifield won the 200-meter hurdles in 33.83 seconds in the boys’ 13-14 division. He also placed third in the high jump and fifth in the long jump.

Rileigh McGree won the 100-meter race in 14.71 seconds in the girls’ 11-12 division. She claimed second in the 80 hurdles and third in the long jump.

Boyle ran to victory in the 100 in the boys’ 13-14 group. His time was 12.35 seconds.

Butte athletes Chase Merrifield, Jason Johns, Casey Merrifield, Lindsay McGree and Erik Johns also had strong showings in the event.

Choquette, in the 8-under boys’ division, placed third in the 100 and second in the 200 and 400. Jason Johnson placed second in the 200 of the 9-10 boys’ division. He also took fourth in the long jump and fifth in the 100.

Erik Johns competed in the boys’ 13-14 group and took second in the 200 and shot put. He placed third in the 100 and 400.

In the girls’ 13-14 division, Lindsay McGree placed third in the long jump and fifth in the 100. Casey Merrifield took seventh in the boys’ 11-12 100-meter race.
