Burnett, McGrath, Keller advance to semifinals

MISSOULA — A Butte High singles player and a doubles team will be playing in the girls’ semifinals when the Western AA Divisional tennis tournament resumes Friday.

Junior Ashlyn Burnett reached the final four in singles, while seniors Brooke McGrath and Katie Keller moved on to the semifinals in doubles play Thursday.

Bulldog seniors Ashley Olson and Sevanna Challeen are also still alive after the first day of play.

Burnett won two matches to set up a battle with Brooke Williams of Missoula Big Sky. McGrath and Keller will take on Big Sky’s Kadyn Easter and Amber Williams.

Olson and Challeen won their opener before falling in the second round. They rebounded with a win, and are two wins away from advancing to the Class AA State tournament, which is next week in Missoula.

The top four singles players and doubles players move on.

Butte High players Sage Murphy, Rebecca Radoicich and Carley Trefts bowed out of the tournament. Trefts picked up a win before losing out.

Bulldog doubles teams Isabel Russo/Mia McCarthy and Maya Dare/Frankie Cox also lost out.

No Butte High boys are left playing. Thad Holdsworth, Sam Sampson and Jason Johns played singles for Butte High. Sampson won a match before ending his season.

Kershaw Mellott and Cole Skeel played doubles for Butte High.
