One year to the day after the tragic deaths of Casey Boyle and Kyle Burgman, the two Butte men will be honored by something they both loved so much. A basketball game.
The inaugural Burgman/Boyle Alumni Classic will be held Wednesday, Aug. 10 at the Butte Civic Center. Tipoff is at 6 p.m., and admission is $5. Children 12 and under will be admitted free.
All proceeds from the game will go to the Burgman/Boyle Memorial Scholarship Fund. (Mountain West FCU, 400 East Park Street)
One team will feature Kyle Burgman’s three sisters and players with ties to the family and Butte High. That team will be coached by John Thatcher.
The other team will consists of Casey Boyle’s three brothers and other players with ties to Boyle and Butte Central. BC coach Brodie Kelly will serve as a player/coach for that squad.
A collection of players who starred from the Bulldogs and Maroons over the past two decades will fill out the rosters.
A game for special education players will be held before the Alumni Game, and the decorated Dynamic Dance and Tumbling Academy will perform at halftime.
Also, the Burgman/Boyle scholarship fund will present a total of $6,000 in scholarships to recent graduates of Butte High and Butte Central. A cribbage tournament at the Knights of Columbus Hall in February raised more than $7,000 to kick start the scholarship fund.
During an appearance on KBOW Overtime Wednesday night, Tom Boyle said he plans to make the basketball game an annual event.
