LEWISTOWN — For the second straight year, East Middle School from Butte placed third at the Montana Middle School Championships Saturday at the Fergus High School Field House.
Team Champs, a club from Billings, defended its title in the tournament that included 30 teams from around the state with 287 points. Laurel took second at 267.
The Bullpups scored 178.5 points, beating fourth-place Billings Darkhorse by eight points.
Karson Pumnea and Maverick McEwen led the Bullpups, placing second in their weight class. Pumnea wrestled at 110 pounds, while McEwen competed at 105.
Ryder McEwen (80 pounds) took third for Butte, while Trey Hason (140) placed fourth, Kade Schleeman (189) took fifth, and Will Stepan (100) and Luke McMahon finished sixth.
In all, 44 wrestlers competed for the Bullpups.
The Bullpups also entered a handful of less-experienced grapplers in the JV competition, and Butte’s Mose Moulton won the division for wrestlers 123 to 133 pounds.
Henry Harrington (87-93) and Kaleb Grunhuvt (89-94) took second, and Jacoby Baughman (90-99), Aydin Gonzales (101-111) and Tanner Marble (109-121) each took third.
