Bulldogs sweep Hawks, Raptors in wrestling duals

BOZEMAN – Butte High’s wrestlers rode an emotional high on the bus to Bozeman Tuesday night and the energy sparked them to dual meet wins over Bozeman High and Bozeman Gallatin in non-conference competitions.

The Bulldogs beat Bozeman High 54-21, then whipped Gallatin High of Bozeman 46-18. A number of Butte High wrestlers were double-winners and some of the Bulldogs regulars were missing from the lineup with head coach Cory Johnston hunting varsity time for some of the other members of the team.

“Overall, I’d say tonight was one of our better nights competing as a group,” Johnston said. “Our energy level was fantastic and our kids were looking for scoring opportunities the entire six minutes. We were able to avenge some losses from earlier in the year, and also had the opportunity to throw some of our young kids into varsity action.”

Joey Ward was a double-winner for Butte High with pins of 1 minute, 16 seconds over Stetson Tripp of Bozeman High and 2:51 over Hyat Reece of Gallatin while wrestling at 113 pounds. Senior 205-pounder  Cohen Grunhuvd also won twice by falls, in 1:31 over Oliver Huntley of Bozeman High and in 1:33 over Weston James of Gallatin.

Senior Reid Whitlock won by forfeit in one meet and pinned Carson Shaw of Gallatin in 5:47 at 138 pounds. Bryton Hardesty, 138-pounder, pinned Bozeman High’s Anderson Lannoye just before the final buzzer, and outpointed Dawson Erickson of Gallatin 8-4. Sophomore Will Stepan won at two different weight classes. He pinned Pi Taylor of Bozeman High in 4:07 at 152 pounds, then posted a 13-5 major decision over Gallatin’s Kameron Amende at 145. Trey Hansen, the Bulldog 160-pounder, pinned Jake Adams of Bozeman in 2:41, and outpointed Tucker McKay of Gallatin 6-4.

Jake Bailey bumped into the varsity lineup at 170 pounds and edged Gallatin’s Tommy Springman 5-4 after getting a forfeit against Bozeman High. Bulldog Kale Schonsberg won on a forfeit versus Bozeman High and pinned Isiah Matosich of Gallatin at 1:32 in their bout at 182 pounds.

The Butte High romps came on the heels of a 53-15 win over Gallatin and a 44-23 quarterfinal-round loss to Billings Senior in the Class AA Duals tournament held Saturday in Great Falls. Again, Johnston used the competition to gain seeding time for many of the Bulldogs who have wrestled mostly subvarsity this season.

Butte High will go to Kalispell on Saturday for dual meets against defending State AA champion and top-ranked Flathead and Glacier. Johnston said the Bulldogs will then have wrestled a dual meet against every Class AA team this season.
