Bulldogs score 19 in win, 14 in loss at softball Crossover

GREAT FALLS — Butte High won in a rout and lost by a nudge in high school girls’ softball competition Saturday at the Class AA Crossover event held in the Multi-Sports Complex.
All 16 Class AA teams vied in the meet, which matched Eastern AA teams against Western AA opponents, each playing two games.
Butte High walloped Bozeman High 19-4 and nicked 15-14 by C.M. Russell of Great Falls.
No stats or results from the competition count as official.
The Bulldogs hammering of the Hawks saw eighth-grader Rigby Bauer and freshman Kendallyn Schab handle the pitching chores while Bozeman pitchers struggled with wildness. The Butte High hitting attack saw catcher Gracie Ferriter, center fielder Ashlinn Mullaney and left fielder Taylor Drakos all swat doubles.
Ferriter and Drakos also hit singles, third baseman Kamber Leary laced two singles and first baseman Madisyn Swanson and right fielder Mattie Stepan each knocked a base hit. Mullaney and shortstop Allie Becker were both hit twice by pitches and second baseman Reese Johnson walked three times. Bauer, Becker and Johnson drew their first varsity starts in the game.
Senior Ashby Lee was the designated player in the Butte High lineup and worked a walk.
The Bulldogs pounded out 18 hits against C.M. Russell, but also committed seven errors.
Mullaney pitched and she also clubbed a home run, two doubles and a single. The homer was her third of the year. Sophomore second baseman Gracie Jonart became the second Bulldog to homer this spring with her solo blast in the fifth inning.
Ferriter belted a single and double, Swanson singled twice, Stepan stung two doubles, Lee hit a double and two singles, Jonart had two singles to go with her home run, junior third baseman Hailey Skeel and poked a pair of singles.
Butte High will return to Western AA Conference action on Tuesday with a 3 p.m. home game against Helena High at Stodden Park.
