Bulldogs place fourth, Braves extend Street Mining City Duals reign

By Bruce Sayler

Hard experience was the weekend goal and Butte High certainly gathered plenty. A fourth-place showing prize along the way, indicated head coach Cory Johnston.
The Bulldogs won their first five dual meets of the 35th annual Jim Street Classic Mining City Duals high school wrestling tournament. Then, they hit some trouble and fell 46-21 to reigning state Class AA champion Billings West in the tourney semifinals. Then, vying for third place, they were beaten 57-18 by Great Falls High. So, Butte High took fourth place.
Later, Flathead of Kalispell chained its third straight Mining City Duals team title with a 34-31 win over West. Flathead had barely survived Great Falls High, 31-29, to advance to the championship dual meet as good teams were tight together at the top of the pile.
“The whole idea about this weekend was the experience,” Johnston said Saturday in the Butte Civic Center after the Bulldogs played out their stay in the tournament at the arena. “Last weekend and this weekend combined, we wrestled 13 of the AA schools between our varsity and jayvees. We get a shot at the other three on our schedule.”
The Butte High junior varsity is branded a second varsity for the Bulldogs and has been entered in The Mining City Duals as a varsity in recent years. This year’s version fell to the consolation bracket after going 0-3 in Friday’s pool rounds.
“It was a grind of a weekend,” Johnston said. “It doesn’t matter if you go 6-and-0 or 1-and-6, you have to wrestle every match (due to the duals format). You can’t sit and lick your wounds until next week. You have to wrestle again in an hour.”
A number of Bulldogs enjoyed success in the tourney, stacking up wins. The few losses by the nucleus were to top-notch competitors and often when wrestling up a weight class. The outstanding Bulldogs included freshman Bode Hazlett, junior Will Stepan, senior Maverick McEwen and senior Kade Schleeman. Two of Stepan’s three wins Saturday clinched Butte High team victories and tournament advancement. One was a pin over Bozeman Gallatin’s Quinn Haarer that secured a 42-33 win against the Raptors in the last bout of their dual meet. The other, a 19-5 major decision over WilJames Courville of Ronan in the second-to-last match of their meet, provided just enough cushion for a 35-34 win in the quarterfinals.
“The last dual, we were a little flat,” Johnston said, alluding to the Bison winning the first seven matches to roll to a 45-0 start. “It was an emotional up-and-down day. It was a great time to do that because State will be a lot more emotional.”
No worrisome injuries were incurred as Johnston described Butte High’s status in such as “just like everybody else,” – they wrestled a batch of bouts and scrapes and bruises resulted.
“As a group, since last Saturday, the light has seemed to come on for some of the guys,” the coach said. “There are too many names (to pick as standouts), nobody particular over anybody else.
“But, I do think Reveles McEwen was a nice surprise. We’re one of the AAs with a eighth-grader in our lineup and getting some wins.”
Butte High will be home in old Butte High Gym on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. dual meet against Belgrade. The girls’ teams from both schools are tentatively scheduled to vie, also. The Bulldog boys will then send two teams to tournaments next weekend as the first team will go to a meet in Gillette, Wyoming, and Butte High Team Two will compete in the CMR Holiday Classic tourney in Great Falls.
