Bulldogs place fourth as coach reaches milestone

GREAT FALLS — Butte High’s wrestling team placed fourth at the Montana AA Duals Saturday at the Great Falls High Fieldhouse.

The Bulldogs also gave seventh-year head coach Cory Johnston a memorable milestone.

Butte High fell 37-30 to Billings West in the third-place match. Before that, Butte High beat Gallatin 54-21 and Great Falls High 46-18. (Complete results)

After dropping a 55-14 decision to Billings Senior in the semifinals, Butte High beat Billings Skyview 46-21 to advance to the third-place match.

The win over the Falcons was the 100th dual win for Johnston and his staff.

Maverick McEwen, Kip Pumnea and Riley Downey went undefeated on the day to lead the Bulldogs, who used 24 grapplers in the five duals.

McEwen, wrestling at 145 pounds, went 5-0 with four pins and one 6-3 decision. Three of his pins came in the first round. The third was in the second.

Wrestling at 132 and 138, Pumnea went 4-0 with two pins and two major decisions. He racked up pins in 10 and 43 seconds.

Downey, who competed at 182 pounds, went 3-0 with two pins and a 6-5 decision.

Wiley Dallaserra won his only match at 152 pounds.

Connor Konda (at 152 pounds) and Gavin Vetter (160) went 3-1 on the day, while Tyrese LeProwse (103), Mason Christian (182) and Kade Schleeman (285) each went 3-2. Trey Whitlock (113) won two matches, and Grady Winston (113), Cole Worley (120), Kyler Raiha (120), Karson Pumnea (126), Will Stepan (126) and Morgan McClernan (160) each won one.

The Bulldogs, who are 23-5 in duals this season, will take on Missoula Sentinel at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Butte High’s old gym.
