The Butte High Bulldogs will be playing for their first trip to the Class AA State volleyball tournament in 12 years Thursday when they head to Great Falls to take on Great Falls Russell.

The Eastern AA playoff match begins at 6 p.m. at the CMR Fieldhouse. The winner moves on to next week’s state tournament in Bozeman. The loser is done for the season.

Under first-year head coach Jeni Hope, the Bulldogs enter the Eastern AA playoffs as the No. 4 seed. Butte High went 4-8 in conference play and 9-17 overall. The Bulldogs have been playing their best volleyball of late.

CMR finished the season at 7-5 and 16-13. The teams split the season series, with Butte High winning in five games in Butte on Sept. 11. Butte High won that match despite a 16-kill, eight-block performance by CMR’s Allie Olson.

Seniors Brittney Tierney, Devin Amtmann and Maddie Worlie and 6-foot-2 juniors Kira Mortensen and Emma Field lead the Bulldogs into action.

Juniors Cameron LaFond, Grace McGrath, MaKenna Carpenter and Trisha Ericson are key contributors for the Bulldogs, as are sophomores MacKenzie Tutty and Hannah Morin-Ferguson and freshmen Kennadie McMaon and Brooke McGrath.

The Bulldogs have not qualified for the state tournament since they went as the No. 2 seed from the Western AA in 2006.
