Bulldogs, Maroons post wins, PRs at Missoula meet

MISSOULA — Athletes from Butte High and Butte Central combined for 10 individual victories and a ton of personal records Friday at Missoula County Stadium.

Butte High’s boys and girls both placed third in the four-team meet that included Butte Central, Missoula Hellgate and Missoula Sentinel. The Maroons, whose numbers could not compare to the other three teams placed fourth.

Butte athletes picking up wins were Holt Downey, Jack Luoma, Jonas Sherman, Jaric Sparks, McKenzie Case and Dylann Bartoletti of Butte High and Rileigh McGree and Kinley Hamilton of Butte Central.

McGree led the way for the Mining City athletes. She posted wins in the long jump, 200 meters and 100-meter hurdles. She jumped 16 feet, 10 ½ inches to win the long jump and posted a time of 27.19 seconds in the 200.

McGree ran the 100 hurdles in 16.78 while running by herself.

Hamilton had a big day for the Maroons. She won the shot put with a mark of 33 feet, 8 ½ inches. She also placed fourth in the discus.

Case won the 3,200 meters with a time of 14:00.38, and Bartoletti ran to a win in the 300 hurdles in 52.32.

Downey won the 300 hurdles in 42.07. It was one of three top-three finishes for Downey, who took second in the 110 hurdles and third in the 100-meter dash.

Luoma surged at the end to win the 400 meters in 56.30, edging teammate Issac Kohler. Kohler also placed fifth in the 200.

Jonas Sherman cleared 5-9 to win the high jump. He tied with BC’s Kyle Holter, but Sherman won on jumps. Both missed on attempts at 6 feet. Holter also placed second in the long jump.

Sparks and teammate Gavin Vetter both cleared 12-6 in the pole vault. Sparks won on jumps.

Morgan McClernan and Cameron Tobiness each added a pair of top-three finishes for Butte High’s boys. McClernan took second in the 300 hurdles and third in the 110 hurdles. Tobiness took third in the triple jump and pole vault.

Wyatt Gross ran to fifth in the 100 — out of 68 competitors — and sixth in the 200.

Other Butte High boys to place in the top six were Noah Sage (fourth in the 200), Vance Stapley (fourth, 3,200), Jacob Nielson (fourth, 300 hurdles), Ryan Tomich (fifth, 800), Kyler Stenson (fifth, discus), Connor Konda (fifth, pole vault), Dylan Bache (fifth, long jump), Bo Demarais (sixth, long jump), Brady Maloughney (sixth, pole vault), Alex Watson (sixth, triple jump) and Kaden Hennessey (sixth, 800).

Central’s Sam Henderson placed fifth in the triple jump, and teammate Riley Gelling took sixth in the discus.

Butte High’s Mollee Conlan, Alex Kovnesky and Darby Harrington posted second-place performances for the Bulldogs. Conlan took second in the 100, while Kovnesky ran the 3,200, and Harrington ran the 300 hurdles.

Bulldog Cora Rauch placed third in the discus and fourth in the shot put. Gabriel McPeak took third in the 300 hurdles, and Tasia Swan placed third in the high jump.

Aili McClafferty (javelin) Madison Seaholm (200) and Hailey Hotalen (300 hurdles) posted fourth-place finishes. Butte’s Pieper Joseph took fifth in the 800 and sixth in the long jump.

Central’s Ella Moodry placed third in the long jump and took fourth in the 100 and javelin.

The Bulldogs will head to Billings to take on Senior on Thursday. Next up for the Maroons is a meet in Hamilton next Saturday.
