Bulldogs, Maroons post strong times in Bozeman

BOZEMAN — Butte High and Butte Central runners posted strong numbers at the Bozeman Cross Country Meet Saturday. (Results)

Junior Jake Vetter led the Butte High boys’ team, finishing the 5-kilometer race in 17 minutes, 31.05 seconds. That was good for 35th place overall.

Butte seniors Austin Gerry and Erik Casagranda weren’t far behind. Gerry crossed in 36th place at 17:32.89, while Casagranda finished 41st in 17:42.

Missoula Hellgate’s Isaac Schmidt won the race in 15:18.47, while Bozeman runner Duncan Hamilton Jr. took second in 15:22.54.

Butte Central senior Brian McGeehan placed 80th overall, crossing in 18:36.09.

On the girls’ side, Bulldog freshman Aubree Corcoran placed 24th overall in 20:20.58. Bozeman senior Camila Noe won the race in 17:51.62.

Bozeman’s boys ran away with the team title, scoring just 25 points. Hellgate was second at 116, followed by Manhattan Christian at 174.

Butte High placed 11th in the meet that saw 20 teams with scores. The Bulldogs scored 273 points.

Bulldog junior Billy Cunneen placed 52nd overall with a time of 18:09. Butte High sophomores Brok Martin and Sean Foley also broke 20 minutes, Marin in 19:20.13 and Foley in 19:32.12.

Senior Ryan Moore (20:44.65) and junior Clint Connors (21:50) also ran for the Bulldogs.

Butte Central senior Nathan Ortega finished in 20:05.82.

Bozeman also took the girls’ team title, also with 25 points. Hellgate was second at 69, followed by Helena Capital at 141. Butte High placed 12th at 327.

The top four BC runners were underclassmen.

After Corcoran, fellow freshman Hailey Tonneson finished 35th in 20:50.99. Sophomore Danika Murphy finished in 22:57.59, and freshman Anna Trudnowski crossed in 23:36.54.

Also running for the Bulldogs were junior Gabby Haberman (23:36.59), senior Rosie Real (23:43.63) and junior Helena Schoonen (24:12.98).

Freshman Savannah Parks, BC’s lone girl runner, had another strong showing. She finished in 23:57.43.

Butte High is back in action Friday when they run in Great Falls. Central, which ran in Bozeman because Saturday’s Harrison Invitational was called off, will run at the Polson Invitational on Saturday.

Both teams will run at the Butte High Invitational Sept. 23.
