Bulldogs, Maroons go hunting track titles

Butte’s Blume vaults to third

It doesn’t get any bigger than this for the Butte High and Butte Central track teams.

Bulldog and Maroon athletes will hunt for state titles Friday and Saturday when they head to their respective State meets.

Central will be at the Laurel Sports Complex for the Class A State meet, which will be run in conjunction with the Class B meet. (Schedule)

Butte High heads to the Class AA State meet at Missoula County Stadium. That meet will be held alongside the Class C meet. (Schedule)

The meets actually began Thursday evening with the pole vault competition, and Butte High senior Brennen Blume clearing 14 feet, 6 inches to place third.

In all, the Bulldogs will take 26 athletes to Missoula one week after the teams captured 10 titles at the Western A Divisional meet in Kalispell.

Senior Tanner Huff was part of four divisional titles last week. The future Montana Western football player won the 100- and 200-meter races as well as running a leg of Butte High’s championship 400- and 1,600-meter relay teams.

Huff is also a state title contender in the javelin after placing second at the Divisional meet.

Fellow senior Christian Hansen is also looking to close his remarkable season with some trips to the podium. He won the long jump and triple jump last week. He also ran a leg of the 1,600-meter relay.

Christian Vetter, Rylan Richards and Zach Merrifield, all seniors, run with Huff in the short relay. In addition to the divisional title, they have have qualified in individual events as well. Cole Worley and Ryan Neil are alternates.

Senior Colton Case and Neil run the long relay with Huff and Hansen. Morgan McClernan and Cole Stewart are alternates.

Sophomore Cameron Gurnsey is also looking to build on his Western A Divisional title in the high jump, an event he has been a favorite in all season. One of his closest competitors figures to be junior teammate Dylan Snyder.

On the girls’ side, senior Anna Trudnowski and junior Mollee Conlan enter the State meet as Western AA champions. Trudnowski won the high jump and the 300-meter hurdles. She will also compete in the 400, 100 hurdles and triple jump.

Conlan won the 100 meters last week. She will also run the 400-meter relay.
