Butte High’s boys’ and girls’ track teams will be looking for more state qualifiers when the Bulldogs compete at the Eastern AA Divisional meet Friday and Saturday at Bozeman’s Van Winkle Stadium.
Action begins at 2 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m. on Saturday.
Five individuals and three relay teams for Butte High have already reached qualifying standards and will compete next week at the Class AA State meet in Kalispell. The top six individuals and relay teams in each event at the divisional meet will also move on.
Junior Tommy Mellott has already qualified in four individual events to lead the Butte High boys. He is set to go to state in the 100 meters as well as the 200, 400 and long jump.
Sophomore Anna Trudnowski has qualified for state in three events, the high jump, triple jump and 400. Her mark of 5 feet, 5 inches in the high jump ranks No. 3 in the Class AA.
Seniors Gabbie Parini (long jump) and Ally Cleverly (400) have also qualified, meaning they will represent Butte High at state for the fourth time. Butte High’s girls also have reached the qualifying standard in the 1,600-meter relay.
Bulldog junior Quinn Sullivan has reached the standard in the 300 hurdles.
Butte High has qualified in the 1,600 and 400 relay. Both teams enter the divisional as the third-ranked relay teams in the Class AA.
Mellott, Sullivan, seniors Jake Vetter and Josh Neil, junior Tucker Winston and sophomore Zach Merrifield give the Bulldogs plenty of options in the relays.
Cleverly, Parini, sophomore Braleigh Garrett and promising freshman Mollee Conlan make up Butte High’s No. 1 short relay team on the girls’ side.
Cleverly, Trudnowski and sophomores Christiana Beierle and Hailey Nielson reached the qualifying mark for Butte High while placing second in the 1,600 relay at the Top 10 Meet in Missoula.
Butte High had a limited season because of the heavy late-winter snow. Still, the Bulldogs appear to be hitting their stride at the right time. The team saw several outstanding performances in last week’s dual meet against the Hawks in Bozeman.
Trudnowski (high jump), Cleverly (200), Nielson (3,200), Conlan (100) and sophomore Allyson Mueller (javelin) picked up wins on the girls’ side a week ago. Mellott (long jump), Sullivan (300 hurdles), Vetter (400), sophomore Tanner Huff (javelin) won for the boys.
Seniors Billy Cunneen, Kyle Hardin, Calvin Snow, Carl Anderson, Andrew VandonBos, Ryan McCarthy, Dakota Eggars, Josie Klapan, McKenzie Faulkner, Maddie Worley, Faith Kelly, Meaghan Weisenfels, Marty Ludwick and Gabby Haberman have also competed for the Bulldogs this season.
A good chunk of those seniors are hopefuls to extend the season one more week.
